The Baker Lab at Lovelace Biomedical Research Institute, is seeking a highly motivated individual to serve as a Research Technician with our virology group. The individual will help the PI set up the new laboratory, and significantly contribute to the organizational framework of the lab. The candidate will demonstrate exemplary organizational skills, and a proven track record of working independently and on teams is ideal. Candidate must have previous molecular biology experience and will primarily be responsible for assisting in the performance of multiple host-related infectious disease research projects in the laboratory.
Tasks include the propagation, characterization, quantification, and manipulation of RNA viruses and how they interface in cell culture with various vertebrate hosts. A well-qualified person will have the additional opportunity to work in bioinformatic approaches to identify and characterize genetic and transcriptomic host responses to RNA virus infection.
The Research Technician will be primarily responsible the organization and upkeep of supply inventories and laboratory equipment. Responsibilities also include maintenance of continuous cell cultures, accurate and complete study records, and analyzing data and communicating research and news to the team, all while maintaining a clean and safe laboratory environment. The Research Technician will eventually be responsible to lead scientific projects and to provide scientific guidance to the group.
Bachelor's degree in a scientific area or with comparable course; or an equivalent combination of education, training and/or and experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been attained.
Must be able to demonstrate an understanding of virology and molecular biology principals and procedures. Must have the ability to successfully perform a variety of laboratory procedures using standard laboratory equipment and instruments. Must have the ability to gather, analyze and report data as well as the ability to design, organize, and/or coordinate scientific research projects.
Requires strong written and verbal communication skills, the ability to work independently and as a part of a team. Preferred computer proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, Internet Explorer, Outlook and the ability to learn department-specific computer systems as needed.
Preference will be given to individuals who have experience with project management.

Salary is commensurate with experience + $500 sign-on bonus.
