Lovelace Biomedical Research Institute is seeking a highly motivated individual to serve as a Research Technologist within the Microbial analysis group. An individual who demonstrates exemplary organizational skills with a proven track record of working independently and on teams is ideal. The Research Technologist will primarily be responsible for assisting in the performance of multiple research projects, simultaneously in BSL-2 and BSL-3 laboratories, including preparation of samples for various methods of nucleic acid extraction, extraction of both DNA and RNA on various sample types, quantification of nucleic acid concentration and qPCR, RT-qPCR analysis as appropriate for the study.   The Research Technologist will also be responsible for laboratory tasks that span bacteriology, virology and immunology.  These may include maintenance of continuous cell cultures, quantification of viable microbes including bacteria, fungi, and/or viruses, and performing a variety of biochemical assays (including, but not limited to, qPCR, ELISA, and microscopic analyses), supply inventory, and laboratory equipment.  The research technologist will do this in addition to developing paperwork, analyzing data, processing study samples all while maintaining a clean and safe laboratory environment.  The work will include both regulatory and non-regulatory compliance.

Under the general supervision of the Director of Comparative Medicine, the Research Technologist is a part of a multidisciplinary research team composed of veterinarians, staff scientists, research associates, and veterinary and research technicians. Research programs are broad in scope, and may include animal model development and characterization studies as well as pre-IND pharmacology, efficacy and/or toxicology studies. Research disciplines include infectious disease, physiology/pharmacology, and rare disease/gene therapy.   The Research Technologist will perform a variety of complex tasks following established techniques and procedures as part of the Comparative Medicine and Pharmacology Teams. Tasks may include both in vivo and in vitro procedures, including dose administration, assistance with complex in vivo measurements, sample collection and processing, organization of study data, sample inventory and shipment, and assistance with other tasks related to study coordination and execution. The Research Technologist will work with a variety of animal species. The ideal candidate will work well in a fast-paced and team-oriented environment. General knowledge and experience in preclinical research is highly desirable; strong communication and organizational skills are essential, as is a high aptitude and desire for learning new research skills and techniques.

Under general direction, the Veterinarian Technician conducts a variety of routine health care procedures on the Institute’s animal populations following established techniques and procedures.  Procedures include clinical diagnostics, sample collection, administration of drugs or therapeutics, anesthetic monitoring from induction to recovery, dental prophylaxis, and related activities.   The Veterinarian Technician participates in routine animal colony maintenance and preventative care, including health assessments, vaccination, and other prescribed health maintenance procedures.  The individual may be required to work with biological samples such as blood, serum, plasma and urine.
