The Baker Lab at Lovelace Biomedical Research Institute, is seeking a highly motivated individual to serve as a Research Technician with our virology group. The individual will help the PI set up the new laboratory, and significantly contribute to the organizational framework of the lab. The candidate will demonstrate exemplary organizational skills, and a proven track record of working independently and on teams is ideal. Candidate must have previous molecular biology experience and will primarily be responsible for assisting in the performance of multiple host-related infectious disease research projects in the laboratory.
Tasks include the propagation, characterization, quantification, and manipulation of RNA viruses and how they interface in cell culture with various vertebrate hosts. A well-qualified person will have the additional opportunity to work in bioinformatic approaches to identify and characterize genetic and transcriptomic host responses to RNA virus infection.
The Research Technician will be primarily responsible the organization and upkeep of supply inventories and laboratory equipment. Responsibilities also include maintenance of continuous cell cultures, accurate and complete study records, and analyzing data and communicating research and news to the team, all while maintaining a clean and safe laboratory environment. The Research Technician will eventually be responsible to lead scientific projects and to provide scientific guidance to the group.
The Covey lab is a new laboratory that studies the neural circuit mechanisms of motivated behavior in mice. We are seeking a skilled and extremely motivated technician to join this highly collaborative environment that uses state-of-the-art techniques such as optogenetics, fiber photometry recordings, and viral-genetic approaches for manipulating and monitoring specific cell signaling mechanisms in defined neural circuits. We are particularly interested in how the brain endocannabinoid system regulates dopamine function to guide effort-based decision making, in an attempt to understand fundamental neural underpinnings of motivation, learning, and reinforcement in health and disease.
The individual will be expected to document laboratory work to acceptable standards and to assist with purchasing of consumables and to maintain laboratory/medical equipment and supplies in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), protocols and regulations.
Primary responsibilities include:
1. Performing neural recordings and manipulations in mice during complex behavioral tasks
2. Mouse stereotaxic surgeries
3. Mouse breeding and colony maintenance
4. Data collection and analysis
5. Routine lab maintenance
